Faxing
(in 10,000 words or less)
Let's face it,
faxing is something that all
of us do a lot without really understanding it. How does faxing
work anyway? And how does FileMaker control it with something
like FaxTool?

Just like Printing
Most
of us use the fax software that came with our modems. We installed
it, and don't think much about it. After installation we put in
our name, fax number, modem type, and some other stuff about ourselves,
and then whenever it's time to fax, we hold down a modifier key
(like OPTION or CONTROL) and where we usually see "Print..." we
see "Fax...".
Click on "Fax...", and we get some more choices, like what kind of cover
page and then a list of people that we can fax to. If our intended
recipient isn't there, we create them, and select their name.
After finding our faxee, we click the big "FAX" button and away
we go. There's that printing type thing (it looks like PrintMonitor)
and then we hear the modem dial and off goes the fax. Sometimes
it tells us if the fax went okay, or redials if it needs to.

What
does all that do, anyway?
Computer
faxing is nothing more than printing with a twist. Let's assume
that you have fax software installed, a working phone line, and
a memo you want to fax to your associate.
After you write your memo, you get ready to fax by holding down the
"OPTION" key, and your "Print..." command changes to "Fax...".
This is a shortcut for changing the print driver in your Chooser-
it's the same as opening the Chooser and changing the printer
to "FaxPrint". |
